Dunes of Erg Chebbi
Although not quite part of the Sahara itself (which technically lies a little further south), the dunes of Erg Chebbi cast mighty shadows at sunset with some dunes towering 150m tall.
An expansive dune sea, Erg Chebbi (which is created from blown sand like all Ergs) stretched for about 28km.
One of the best ways to see Erg Chebbi is by camel ride from Merzouga.
Location of Erg Chebbi
Erg Chebbi is located just a little East of the tourist node of Merzouga, which in itself is just South Rissani and the larger town of Erfoud, and it is just a few kilometers from the Algerian border.
Although it resembles the Sahara desert and is not a huge distance North of it, Erg Chebbi’s semi-arid weather means that it is not officially a desert and not part of the Sahara.
That won’t stop visitors enjoying the stunning sunsets that cast long shadows on the undulating dues.
Erg Chebbi Information
Erg Chebbi is formed from blow sand that was carried down primarily by the Ziz and Rheris rivers, creating towering and beautiful dunes that put visitors in mind of the Sahara. Many people would consider these dunes more attractive than the actual Sahara due to their towering and majestic nature which is largely absent from the Moroccan section of the Sahara.
How To Get to Erg Chebbi
Erg Chebbi is far more accessible that you may think, with good roads to the North running through Rissani and Erfoud down to Merzouga which acts as a stepping-off point over the dunes, usually via quad bike or more traditional camels.
Things To Do At Erg Chebbi
For those looking for an authentic and photogenic experience, there are regular camel rides out into the dunes running from Merzouga which usually take around 2 hours to complete in either direction.
Once out in the dunes, popular activities include camping in a nomadic style enjoying traditionally cooked foods such as tagines, and taking in the stunning dune sea sunsets.
If camels aren’t your thing, the dunes can also be accessed via quadbike.
